Message from the President: Excellence Tests – Lecturers

Dear Colleagues,

The Faculty Association and the University have recognized the significant disruptions caused by the coronavirus pandemic on the work of our members and this spring we arrived at a number of agreements to mitigate against some of these impacts on faculty and librarians. To reduce some of these impacts on Lecturers who have some terms and conditions of appointment distinct from their tenure and tenure track colleagues, UBC and the UBCFA agree to provide Lecturers with a 1-year extension to their appointments without going through the “excellence test” pursuant the Collective Agreement. This extension will apply to Lecturers who:

  • have a current appointment with an end date between September 1, 2020 and August 31, 2021; and
  • would otherwise be reviewed for excellence as contemplated in Part 4, Article 2.02 (b) in the time period between September 1, 2020 and August 31, 2021.

The 1-year extension does not apply to Lecturers who have a current term appointment with an end date after August 31, 2021 or for Lecturers who were initially appointed with a known end date and with no expectation of renewal.

Lecturers who have already been successfully assessed for excellence at some point during their current term and for whom a determination has already been made by the Head will be reappointed at the conclusion of the current term.

All of other terms of appointment as spelled out in Part 4, Article 2.02 (Renewable Term Appointments – Lecturers) will continue to apply.

Please contact the Faculty Association if you have any questions or concerns.

President
